Polar bear cubs are born blind, weighing just 1.3 pounds & measuring between 12-14 inches. They grow quickly though, thanks to the high fat content of their mother's milk, & usually match her in size within two years. Cubs stay with their mother for 1-1/2 to 21/2 years, learning to hunt and care for themselves. On average, six out of 10 cubs survive; the rest succumb to starvation, accidents or attack by male polar bears.
